8:30 am to 5:00 pm
Refuge and the Precepts: Right Speech and Right Mindfulness
“Understanding What It Means to Take Refuge and the Precepts”

This one-day Retreat is designed to allow beginners to gain experience in what it means to Take Refuge and to practice the Five Precepts. We will experience how the Refuges and Precepts help develop our Mindfulness. This is also an ideal time for those who have taken Refuge and the Precepts to renew and deepen their practice.

The Three Refuges refers to the practice of a deeper understanding of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha as a means of dealing with difficulties and distress.

The Five Precepts, refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxication, helps us to keep our mind free from creating harm to others and ourselves. This retreat is to investigate these practices more deeply.

As part of this retreat, those who have not taken Refuge will have an opportunity to examine in more depth the connection between the Precepts and the section of the Eightfold Path regarding Right Concentration. For those who have taken Refuge or who have some additional training, we will be investigating Right Speech and Right Mindfulness.

This retreat is open to all. It is not required that you would plan to take Refuge and Precepts. Master JiRu may be offering the Three Refuges and Five Precepts on a Sunday following the retreat. For those interested in the Bodhisattva Vows, we suggest first coming to this retreat to prepare the mind for the higher vows. If you know that you will be wanting to take these vows, please contact Ven. Kungshih at office@maba-usa.org in advance.
